About The Festival //

Making Shakespeare Accessible for More than 25 Years

While many people might associate Shakespeare with high school English class, his works are true classics that help us understand different cultures, different people, and different times. In fact, it’s been said that Shakespeare was ‘not of an age, but for all time.’ Now, more than 400 years after his death, that statement still rings true.

Knowing that many people don’t seek out Shakespearean plays, we sought to bring Shakespeare to the people in a fun, educational, free, and accessible way. The Warehouse Theatre put on our first ever Upstate Shakespeare Festival back in 1995. Since then, it has truly become a Greenville Tradition.

FAQs

When is the festival?

The Upstate Shakespeare Festival takes place each summer. Usually one show runs from May to June and another from June to July. Shows begin at 7:00pm (arrive early to get a spot!) and run Thursday through Sunday each week during the run of shows.

Where is the festival?

Shows take place in beautiful Falls Park.

From the park’s main entrance: after entering the park, walk down the stairs and the stage will be on your right side.

From Furman College Way: enter the park and the stage will be on your left side.

From Falls Street/East Camperdown Way: walk over the Liberty Bridge until you reach Passarelle Bistro. Make a left, and the stage will be at the bottom of the hill.

How much does it cost?

All Upstate Shakespeare Festival productions are free to the public. No tickets are required.

If you plan on enjoying alcohol during the show, you must purchase a wristband ($1, cash only).

Donations are gladly accepted at the end of the performance.

How long does each show run?

Each show is briskly delivered in two hours. Usually, our actors dress in contemporary costumes to bring out the timelessness of Shakespeare’s themes.

What can I bring?

Patrons can bring lawn chairs, blankets, and even food for a picnic. Alcohol is allowed in clear, plastic cups with a valid ID and purchase of a wristband ($1, cash only).

Do you serve food?

We do not serve food, but patrons are encouraged to bring their own outside food for a picnic!

Where should I park?

We recommend parking behind County Square. The festival is just a short, 10-minute walk away. Anyone with mobility concerns may call the festival at 864.787.4016 for more information.

What happens if it rains?

Depending on the amount of rain expected, the show could be performed as scheduled. We update weather cancellations via our Upstate Shakespeare Festival Facebook page as well as by calling the box office.
