Cloud 9

By Caryl Churchill

Setting:

Act I - Colonial Africa, 1880.

Act II - London, 1979, though the characters from Act I have aged only 25 years.

Characters:

CLIVE: A colonial administrator. Extremely dogmatic in his familial relations. He is having an affair with Mrs. Saunders, despite his reprimanding of his wife's infidelity.

BETTY: Clive's dependent wife, played by a man in Act I. She is having an affair with Harry Bagley. In Act II she is played by a woman, and leaves Clive to discovering a newfound sense of her own identity.

JOSHUA: Clive's obedient, African servant, played by a white man. He has a casual sexual relationship with Harry Bagley.

EDWARD: The son of Clive and Betty, played by a woman in Act I. He is attracted to Harry Bagley, and secretly plays with dolls. In Act II he is played by a man, and leaves his male lover, Gerry, in order to live and have sex with his sister Victoria along with her lesbian lover, Lin.

VICTORIA: The daughter of Clive and Betty, played by a dummy in Act I. In Act II, she is played by a woman, and leaves her husband, Martin, to live and have sex with Lin and Edward.

MAUD: Betty's mother. A stiff traditionalist, though well-intentioned.

ELLEN: Edward's governess. In love with Betty.

MRS. SAUNDERS: A widow; uniquely independent.

HARRY BAGLEY: A British explorer and closeted homosexual. He desires to have an affair with Clive, although he continues to woo Betty among others.

LIN: Victoria's friend in Act II; a lesbian. In love with Victoria.

CATHY: Lin's excitable five-year-old daughter, played by a man.

MARTIN: Victoria's husband. He is ashamed of his sex life with Victoria, although he attempts to be supportive of her sexual experimentation.

GERRY: Edward's promiscuous gay lover. He has a strong distaste for commitment.
